The Good Deed Gals Group

I learnt about all the terrific things about being kind and doing nice things for others and so I invited 8 of my closest friends to The Good Deed Gals group. The idea behind the group is that once a month we do a good deed, either as a group or individually.

Some of the things we have done include working in a soup kitchen, picking up litter from the local beach, sending kind notes to people in our lives and buying coffee for others. My favourite has to be making care kits for the homeless.

Care-Packs-With-CatThe idea is that you buy a second hand back pack and fill it with essential items homeless people may need. The backpack will include things like bottled water, non-perishable food items, personal care items like a comb, toothpaste and toothbrush, warm hats and socks. We also put in hand written notes of love about why they are worth receiving this gift.

Care-PacksEach person takes a backpack with them and gives it to the next homeless person they see. One of the group, Catherine, said that she gave her backpack to a homeless woman who she sees on the way to work every morning. When she gave her the backpack, the homeless lady was ecstatic and really thankful. She saw the woman wearing the backpack every morning after that.

Victoria-WelsbyEvery homeless person we encountered were thrilled with the gift and it made us feel terrific in return!

I took the idea to my work and between us all we managed to make 22 homeless care kits. It was a great bonding exercise for the team and it made us feel great about where we worked.

Having a structured monthly time to dedicate to being kind is really important to me as it’s easy for life to slip by without giving back. My life is richer and fuller when I give to others, even if it’s just my time. I think I get more from it than the people I am giving to! – Victoria
