A human being in need

Compassion Is Not Just Feeling With Someone

Last Wednesday on my way to work while it was 19° and icy out, I saw a person under a blanket in the bus shelter. From the position of their head and hands, I was scared they may be frozen to death (though he was wearing purple gloves but his hands were becoming frostbitten).

I pulled into the market lot immediately to check on him. He was so cold he was incoherent. I called 911 for help and while I waited, I got 4 pairs of socks and a sleeping bag from my car (keep it stocked for the homeless in my community). A police officer arrived and said an ambulance was on the way. The officer helped me take his wet shoes off, he had no socks. We put on one pair of socks then put some pocket warmers under each foot, then another pair of socks and did the same thing to his hands. The officer went into a nearby diner and got some hot tea with lots of honey.

The ambulance crew arrived so I continued on to work. – Sharon
