Today has been a blessing.
I feel really blessed today to have been in a position to help a young mother. My own mother struggled financially to bring my brother and I up, and she paid for essential services such as gas and electricity for cooking, heating and light by way of a key that would have money placed onto it. Many a time that money would run out and we would go one or two days without those essential services. It was hard.
This morning, I stood behind a stranger, a young mother, whilst she added credit to her gas and electricity keys. When she went to pay, her debit card would not go through. She asked if she could decrease the amount on each key, and the man behind the counter got a little agitated with her. Anyhow, she went to pay again with the new amount and again her card was declined. By this time the shopkeeper was quite cross, and a queue had formed behind us. I told the shopkeeper that I would pay (I had to place my items back as I had not taken enough money with me to the shop, but that wasn’t a problem, it is only a 10 minute or so walk to and from the shop so I was able to go back). Sadly, you know I don’t think that the shopkeeper was happy that I paid for this young woman’s gas and electricity, and the few grocery items that she had in her arms, but as I explained to him, I was once a child whose own mother struggled to ensure warmth, a means of cooking and a means of light and heating water and you know it felt good, really good to help a young mother and her family.
The look on the young woman’s face is one I shall never forget, and as she thanked me, I said that maybe one day, be it a year or many years from now, she too might find herself in a position to help another. I know in my heart that one day she will be in a position to do just that.
Today really has been a blessing for me. – Allexmarie ♥
