Teaching her grandsons about the homeless

I was at the 99 cent store yesterday (which is rare). I also happened to have cash (also rare — I usually just pay with my card). The woman in front of me had a full cart. She offered to let the boys and I go ahead of her as we only had a few items, but we decided to just wait.

As she took items out of her cart, I started recognizing things: 20 bottles of shampoo, 20 toothbrush-toothpaste sets, 20 hairbrushes, 20 pairs of socks, etc. She explained that she was making kits with her grandsons for the homeless. Ultimately, she spent over $120.

We exchanged some very kind and supportive words and thanked her for what she was doing. She explained that even though her family didn’t have much, she knew how important it was to help others and to teach her grandsons that. (I then noticed her jeans with holes in them). It truly warmed my heart to see what she was doing and I was so grateful I went into that store (so rare) and that I had cash.

We gave her $20 and teased that we were sponsoring the shampoo!! (Wish we could have given more, but she was so gracious and we were so happy to have shared this experience with her and witnessed her kindness in action).

P.S. I would have been at the store earlier that evening if I hadn’t left my purse at the friend’s house that we had just left. It truly was meant to be for us to cross paths. – Jennifer  🙂
