There’s such a great joy in helping others!
Years ago my sister worked at the Royal Bank of Canada, Puerto Rico bank. A co-worker got hit very badly on his way home. His car was destroyed but he was in worse shape with broken bones and glass cuts all over his face and hands. He was young in his late twenties, just starting out.
His wife had recently had a baby girl and could not work. Now they could not pay the rent and lived far away from work and us. His injuries were such that he needed to be in the hospital for months. His wife needed to be with him, so I took their baby and brought her to my apartment. My baby girl Alida was also four months old, so for a while, it felt like I had twins.
When we finally learned that he was getting out of the hospital but had no home to return to, we found out that the church in his town had a little empty old and abandoned Parish that they no longer used, and were letting them have it for a year, rent free. My husband and my sister Griselle, and her husband to be Willie and I took time to make the place livable. The boy’s brother-in-law was a carpenter and replaced many missing boards in the walls and floor. We painted the whole little house. It was so cute, it felt like a playhouse. When the couple was ready to come home, they were very surprised and grateful, to say the least. But we felt ecstatic, emotional, very happy and satisfied.
