We’re almost out of dollars

For a while now I’ve tucked dollar bills into the sunglasses compartment in my truck. It makes it easy to grab one and hand it to our friends on the street corners.

About a month ago my 14-year-old son (who has Asperger’s) returned from a trip to the store to spend some birthday money. He came to my desk where I was working and said, “Dad, I noticed we’re almost out of dollars in the truck.” He handed me $9 in singles which is a huge thing for a kid without a grasp on empathy.

I had some small cards I’d bought that read “Thank you for existing” and each family member wrote a note on the back of the card and paper clipped it to a bill. It was nice to add that little touch and to see my kids interested in doing it. – Rick 🙂
