Man With a Bike

Most days on my way to work, I see this old black man walking his bike on the highway. Attached to the back is this child carrier (the ones you hook on to take your child for a ride). It looks as if he picks up thing off the road. He is never riding the bike but always walking fast on the side of the road, in the heat, in the winter and in the rain.

We have been having days, into months of hard rain. Black clouds go over and open up to become long hard storms. I always have an umbrella in my truck, in fact, I have two because I tend to forget one in my house.

One of those rainy days I went to work and after work, I ran into a storm. I stopped to pick a few things up for dinner and on my way home and notice the man walking in the storm. He was soaked, with nothing to keep the rain off him. I sent up a small prayer that God would make sure I’d remembered my extra umbrella. I have it hard, so I really couldn’t do much more than give him that small gift.

I stop at the stop sign and reach in behind my seat and sure enough, there was the second umbrella. I turned around and approached slowly, hoping I didn’t scare him. I handed him the umbrella. He looked up at me with rain dripping from his face and told me God bless you. I wished I could have done more.

I had to turn around to go home and passed him once again. He was moving with that fast walk he does. I watch him in the mirror as I went down the road. I never saw he stop and put the umbrella over his head. But I know he is safe because I still see him walking down the road pushing his bike as fast as he can walk. – Anna 😀
